Hip-hip-hooray! The (outdoor) birthday parties are back on! This time we can meet in groups of 30, big enough for the whole class to join in the fun. It’s been such a long time since we were able to throw a proper party for our children. With the warm weather approaching and the easing of restrictions, we’re hopeful that things are getting back to normal. But some of us may be a little out of practice or in need of inspiration? So we put together these fun party ideas that work well even with our unpredictable British weather!
Parties in the garden or the park
If you are planning a party in the garden or the park, get ready for all four seasons! You may consider renting a large tent or a marquee to “water-proof” your party in case it rains.
Bell tent parties
There is a wide range of companies that offer affordable tents starting from £99 at Poptop. For a bit of luxury, check out companies such as Tip Top Teepees or Sleepy Lily which are available to book through our website or directly with the company. Their waterproof tents come fully equipped with cushions, lighting, bunting and balloons, all beautifully styled around a particular theme. Whether it’s an outdoor picnic, sleepover or a big fiesta, we can help you get the party going with our stylish online invites.
For the little ones
Many good entertainers can work out a fun outdoor programme to keep the little ones busy and well entertained. Get ready for plenty of singing, dancing and high-energy party games. For a full list of proven, tested and highly recommended third-party entertainers take a look at our party Entertainment section featuring much loved entertainers such as Amanda’s Action Club, Sharkey & George, Latino Bambino and plenty more.
Balloon making and magic
If you’re a little worried about the weather, a combination of magic and balloon making will keep everybody well entertained under the tent covers. Check out magicians Magic Billy or Magic Mikey for an unforgettable magic experience. We also love Miss Balloonuniverse and Brush of Colour for a balloon twisting fun. We’ve got some sweet invitations to match your party theme.
Bouncy castle and soft play
If you have younger children, renting a small soft play area or a bouncy castle (if you have access to a plug) is a great alternative. We like the range and friendly service of the team at Kids Rule London who can set it all up for you.
If you’d rather outsource the hassle of a DIY party, there are plenty of party planners such as Puddles or The Bubbles Crew who can organise it all from sending the invites (hint: choose Kindergifts) to renting the kit, booking entertainers, organising the food & drinks and decorations.
Football in the park
What could be better than a football party for a child who loves kicking the ball, no matter the weather? Sounds familiar? Then all you need is a park and a dad enthusiast to referee the games. If you’d rather use a pro, we can highly recommend Coach Paul from CS Rangers or why not have a charity football party in support of Football Beyond Borders? Not only will your child enjoy a fabulous party but you can also help other children keep out of trouble through the work of FBB. Kick it off with the perfect football party invites.
Game On! birthday party
We all know children spend way too much time on their devices! But this is different and a lot more social than you’d think. It’s a fun and safe experience under a well-aired tent, fully equipped with their favourite games such as Minecraft, FIFA, Mario Kart, Rocket League, Fortnite, Virtual Reality and more.
All you need is a 4m by 6m of space in the garden and the team at Pop Up Arcade will set it all up for you. The tents are large and well-ventilated, good for parties of 10 to 20 children who can take turns, coming in and out of the party tent. It’s the best of both worlds – outdoors in the fresh air but well covered in case it rains.
Party by the pool
For those fortunate enough with access to a swimming pool and a summer birthday, there is nothing better than a splish, splash party by the pool. Are you one of those lucky people? If so, all you need is one of our gorgeous invitations. Add a group gift and a charity, and you’re all ready to go.
Active and adventurous parties
If your child prefers something more adventurous, London and the countryside offer some great outdoor options.
Tag! You’re it
For an adrenaline fuelled adventure, you can now book Adrenaline Rush Laser Combat for up to 30 children. Situated on the fields of Chiswick Rugby Club, the laser tag facility is outside, including tables and benches for the after-party food & drink, and of course the cake. It’s brilliant fun for both boys and girls aged 7 and above, and we’ve got some lovely invites you can customise with your child’s photo and details.
GoApe birthdays
GoApe have now opened their tree-top and other forest adventures for children aged 6 and above. There are even activities for younger children with parent supervision. Some of the locations (e.g. Black Park and Cockfosters) have forest sheds with covered benches and tables which can accommodate up to 30 people. Booking early is a must! Other locations such as Battersea have indoor party rooms which will be available from 21st June – not too far away. Whichever the location, they all have enough space in the forest and surrounding parks for a picnic blanket and a cake.
Go-Karting parties
Another all-time party favourite for both children and adults alike! There are many locations around London such as Revolution Karting which offer outdoor karting for parties of 10 to 15 children and indoor karting under the rule of 6.
There is a much greater choice of indoor venues suitable for smaller parties such as Team-Sport and Capital Karts who currently offer bubble parties of 6. Comes 21st June, those venues will be able to accommodate larger groups of up to 20 children, assuming further relaxation of the indoor restrictions.
Parties for the nature and animal lovers
If you’d like to combine the birthday party experience with some educational activities, there are plenty of options around London.
Party in the Zoo
The London Zoo is now taking group bookings for children’s parties. There are plenty of outdoor playgrounds, benches and picnic areas to hold a little party after the tour. Another great option is the Battersea Park Zoo – smaller but much easier to navigate with a group of young children.
After the long lockdown, these animal attractions, which support important conservation projects, are in need of funding. Your birthday party will not only bring joy and excitement to the party children but it will also support the work of these organisations.
Environmental parks
There are many environmental parks and educational centres around London with great outdoor attractions such as exhibitions, events, treasure hunts and playgrounds for children. A tour of Kew Gardens, the Wetland Centre or the Welsh Harp Environmental Education Centre can be a great birthday treat for those little explorers and a fantastic outing for the parents as well!
